Commercialization

Development of new products is vital to reduce the impact of brain disorders on the lives of individuals, families and society as a whole. While neuroscientists have made great advances in biomedical investigation, it is critical that these insights are translated from basic research into innovative new brain repair techniques. With recent advances in the field of brain repair research, the potential for intellectual property development over the next 5-10 year period is great.

BRC researchers have a proven track record of successful commercialization. Over the past 5 years, BRC researchers have attracted significant industry investments from national and international commercial partners. Innovative products have been developed. The Halifax Neural Transplantation System has been patented and this surgical instrument is currently being licensed to a medical devices company. A portable Event Related Potential (ERP) System is also being developed in partnership with the National Research Council Institute for Biodiagnostics (NRC-IBD) Prototyping Facility. This system will be used for neuro-psychological assessment of patients who suffer from severe communication deficits.

The BRC research team is working to develop products in the following categories:

  • instrumentation and medical devices
  • trophic factors
  • cell restoration
  • protocols
  • pharmaceutical products
  • hardware
  • software

The goal of the BRC is to build upon research successes by taking inventions from the laboratory to the marketplace and bringing forward practical advances in health care that could benefit people around the world. The research team has an outstanding track record in the field of clinical trials. The BRC will continue to partner with medical, pharmaceutical, technology and biotechnology companies to bridge the gap between the bench and bedside.
