In late August 2018, the NS Department of Health & Wellness and Government of Canada with MP Scott Brison and Minister Randy Delorey announced funding for ~$5M to support an ABI Strategic Action Plan based on recommendations by the ABI Strategy Report* co-chaired by the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia (BIANS).

Executive Director of BIANS, Leona Burkey and her team were thrilled with this news and got straight to work planning and implementing projects such as:

  • Supporting the IWK in their development of a phone and web-based tool to help support caregivers of persons with acquired brain injury that will be accessible from home, no matter where you live in NS;
  • Supporting the development of a "neurocommon" with the NS Health Authority - a brand new concept that will be a one-stop-shop for Central Zone's ABI programs, a provincial ABI network and service navigation & support;
  • Supporting a new Peter's Place Day Program and sharing a wonderful new space with them (we are aiming to open by February 2019) - this new space will include a drop-in centre, a day program space and our new offices.  Yep it's true.  This will be the first purpose-built community space for the brain injury community ever in Nova Scotia.

And as if that isn’t enough to keep them busy, BIANS are also updating their website which will include a much-improved collection of resources and helpful information, and they plan to launch a new Acquired Brain Injury Directory of Services for NS. The BRC are pleased to be an ongoing supporter of BIANS and look forward to seeing these plans develop over the coming months.

*The ABI Strategy Report was produced by the Acquired Brain Injury Group which was announced in November 2015. Diana Nichols Nelson, COO of Brain Repair Centre was one of the committee members.
