The
Barbara Newman Telemedicine and Patient Resource Centre
is the latest innovation in providing information to patients,
their families, and to medical and nursing staff. The centre
provides a pleasant atmosphere where patients can meet with
doctors and nurses to discuss and better understand their
disease.
The
centre serves as the hub for patient education, patient support
group sessions, consultations and counseling. The resource
centre is a model for others across Canada, providing patients
with improved understanding of their illness and easy access
to more comprehensive rehabilitation services.
Patients and their families have 24 hour access to comprehensive
educational information on a wide variety of neurological
diseases and disorders. The resources available offer a clear
understanding of the nature of their neurological problem
- in lay terminology - and patients and families are also
able to review the various treatment options and expected
outcomes and/or complications. An expanded role nurse and
neuropsychologist is available to facilitate maximum benefit.
Computer workstations in the room are available for internet
access on disease related information. The room is also equipped
with the latest in image and conference technology to enable
videoconferencing, voice conferencing, and robotic teleneuromentoring
to anywhere in the world. The computers have been generously
donated by Medtronic Canada.
This centre has been made possible by a very generous gift
of $500,000 from Mrs. Barbara Newman to the QEII Foundation. |
