Life Sciences Research Institute

With a confirmed $15-million in funding for the Life Sciences Research Institute (LSRI) from the federal government, construction is currently underway for this $59.3-million building.

The Life Sciences Research Institute will provide research and incubator space for the Halifax region’s growing life sciences and biotechnology sectors boosting the economic growth of the Atlantic provinces by attracting new business, a highly skilled scientific workforce and new investment. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of health of Nova Scotians, Atlantic Canadians and those beyond our own provinces.

The LSRI will consist of two 4 storey towers joined by a central atrium. One tower will be dedicated to research with the renowned Brain Repair Centre (BRC) as the lead tenant. The second tower, under management by Innovacorp, will serve as a business incubator devoted to the discovery and development of investment for commercially viable ideas.

The BRC is dedicated to finding treatments for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and spinal cord injury. The LSRI holds enormous potential to develop innovative treatments and new medical instrumentation that will alleviate pain and suffering. It will also help us to attract and retain top-notch physicians and researchers, providing Atlantic Canadians with access to the latest advances in medical care.

The LSRI will provide space where all brain-repair researchers can work together; they are currently working in separate labs located throughout Dalhousie Medical School, Capital Health and IWK Health Centre facilities.

In addition to Industry Canada funding, the Province of Nova Scotia, ACOA and the Canada Foundation for Innovation have pledged support to the LSRI's capital costs. Financial commitments have also been made by a number of very generous private benefactors, including Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation.
