The primary mission of the National Research Council (NRC)–Institute for Biodiagnostics (Atlantic) (IBDA) is to foster collaborative research within the neuroscience community in Atlantic Canada. The objective is to capitalize on existing regional expertise through capacity building in areas that enable the translation of research from the bench to the bedside. To achieve this goal, NRC-IBDA has two labs available to scientists with novel research ideas.
The Neuroimaging Research Laboratory (NRL) is a partnership between the National Research Council’s Institute for Biodiagnostics (NRC-IBD), the Brain Repair Centre, and the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre (QEII). The research lab which was opened for business in 2003 is highly regarded as a major asset in Atlantic Canada.
The NRL is equipped with a state-of-the-art 4 Tesla (4T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system capable of a wide variety of structural, functional and spectroscopic applications. While work at the NRL focuses on neuroscience, the applications of this technology are not limited to the brain. The 4T is a whole body system, and with the proper radio frequency coils can accommodate a variety of other body imaging applications. In addition, the lab houses a high-resolution MR-compatible electroencephalograph (EEG) system and an MR-compatible transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) system. This variety of
equipment allows for leading-edge investigations and can be combined with high-field MRI. The NRL is designed to accommodate a variety of research studies involving both healthy controls and a range of patient populations.
The Biomedical MRI Research Laboratory (BMRL) is a partnership between NRC – IBD (Atlantic) and the Izaak Walton Killam (IWK) Health Centre. The BMRL welcomes inquiries from researchers who wish to study in vivo experiments in imaging pre-clinical models of disease or micro-imaging studies primarily for in vitro work where image resolution requirements are at a premium. Please see the Information Package for the BMRL for more details, or contact the Research Administrator: Janet.Marshall@nrc.gc.ca. |
