Infrastructure

In the next two decades, brain disorders will surpass cancer and heart disease as the leading cause of death and disability. Brain disorders are devastating for individuals, care givers and families. They result in lost productivity and over $30 billion in health care costs annually in Canada. For most of these disorders, no effective treatments are currently available.

The BRC comprises 29 principal investigators and over 100 individuals who are actively working on brain repair strategies for neurological diseases. We have a unique blend of clinician scientists and basic researchers that provides an excellent platform for translating discoveries and innovations from the laboratory to the clinical setting. Our partners, Dalhousie University, Capital Health District, the IWK Health Centre and the National Research Council have played a fundamental role in the growth and development of the BRC. Their participation and support have made the BRC a major force of research in Atlantic Canada.

Over the past five years, the BRC has brought in over $65 million in research, funding and infrastructure to Halifax to support to work of our investigators. A number of state-of-the-art facilities such as the Cell Restoration Laboratory, the Neuroimaging Research Laboratory and the Telerobotics Centre have been established. These facilities are unique in Atlantic Canada and provide critical research infrastructure.
