Dr. Gail Eskes seeks new treatments to enhance everyday functioning and quality of life for patients who have experienced deficits in attention and memory due to aging and aging related disorders, such as stroke and other brain diseases. She is currently leading an AIF-funded project designed to produce effective technologies for cognitive repair in individuals with stroke and Parkinson's disease. Her current research also includes studies on the underlying mechanisms related to the cause and recovery of an attention disorder caused by damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, called visuo-spatial neglect. Other studies examine how to enhance cognitive functioning with exercise, group memory therapy or computer training. Dr. Eskes' training in basic cognitive neuroscience and her extensive clinical experience in the rehabilitation of cognitive disorders in individuals with brain damage gives a firm foundation for her goal of translating basic science to clinical needs.
