Modern approaches to therapeutics in the disorders of the central nervous system must begin with an understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying how neurons arise in the embryo and how they connect in the proper manner to ensure a working brain and spinal cord. This includes examining the control of cell growth, which is often abnormal in cancers, and the formation of neural circuits during embryo development. Dr. Angelo Iulianella’s work has revealed that the control of growth and maturation of neurons is coupled to formation of different types of neurons. Using mouse genetics, he has identified a number of mutations that affect the ability of the embryo to make newborn neurons and control proliferation in the nervous system. Dr. Iulianella’s research continues to explore the network of genes that regulate the formation of neurons in both the embryonic and adult nervous systems. By understanding how the birth of neurons is accomplished, and how they integrate into functional neuronal circuits, Dr. Iulianella hopes to discover ways to stimulate the repair and recovery of the nervous system function in injured patients.
