Prof. Dr. med. Michael Schmidt, FRCPC
michael.schmidt@dal.ca

Dr. Michael Schmidt is an anaesthesiologist, emergency doctor and intensive care specialist. Furthermore he is a researcher in the field of innovative procedures in anaesthesia. His research focuses on the field of post-operative neuro-cognitive decline (POCD) and the development of organ-protective strategies. This also includes the design and evaluation of new devices for effective and safe anesthetic delivery.

Neurologic injury is a major concern of patients, especially the elderly, undergoing anesthesia of any kind, particularly in cardiac surgery & neurosurgery. Elderly patients have reduced neuronal plasticity and therefore are at the greatest risk. The underlying mechanisms of neuronal injury post-operatively and their prevention remain largely unknown and unpredictable. Dr. Schmidt is one of only a small number of researchers worldwide having expertise in the use of new anesthetic procedures, such as Xenon inhalation, in addition to expertise in multimodal neuro-monitoring to conduct experiments in neuro- and organ protection.
